4th Conference on Health Disparities and Health Expo

 

More than 4,200 attended The Center for Closing the Health Gap’s Fourth Annual Conference on Health Disparities and Health Expo on April 13-14 at the Duke Energy Center in downtown Cincinnati.  This year, the popular event was expanded to two days to include a conference and health expo.  Focused on children and family health, the Expo provided youth-focused entertainment and health screenings throughout the weekend for the entire family.

Over the two days, conferees could attend 35 workshops and visit exhibitor booths for 19 adult and children’s health screenings.  Featured speakers and special guest included Closing the Health Gap Center President and CEO Dwight Tillery, former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, Ohio Director of Health Dr. Alvin Jackson, Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann, News Hour Senior Correspondent Ray Suarez, Rev. Otis Moss, III and R ‘n B Singer Monica. 

Discussions focused on health issues prevalent in minority populations including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes.  Seminars were led by nationally recognized leaders including Dr. Velma Scantlebury, the first African American female transplantation surgeon in the United States and nationally syndicated Urban Radio Talk Show Host Bev Smith of the Bev Smith Show.  The Cincinnati Medical Association led a men’s health session and a Youth and Young Adult forum was led by the 100 Black Men’s organization.  Awards were presented to champions of the Health in Greater Cincinnati and the State of Ohio.
