Do Right Campaign
Minorities Lead the Nation in Obesity
Obesity is closing in on smoking as the nation’s number one underlying, preventable killer. It is a major risk factor for heart disease, high cholesterol, blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and other serious health conditions. Although the obesity epidemic threatens everyone, some groups are at greater risk than others. Obesity rates for both adults and children are substantially higher among African Americans, Mexican Americans, and other minorities. In minority communities, there are also disparities in access to fresh, high quality, and affordable foods and fewer parks and places to play sports.
